Tennis betting: match winner, sets and handicaps

How tennis odds are built from Elo ratings, what best-of-three and best-of-five change, and which markets to know.

Updated October 4, 2026

Tennis betting is a duel: two players, no draw, and a scoring system that rewards the stronger player more than the scoreboard sometimes suggests. Our tennis odds come from Elo ratings rather than from the market, and you can bet them at nocturnsport.com. Here is how the main markets work and what moves them.

Tennis markets explained

Match winner

Who wins the match. If a player retires injured, settlement depends on the house rules shown on the sportsbook, so check them for any player carrying a niggle.

Set handicap

In a best-of-three match, −1.5 sets means the favourite has to win 2-0. A top-10 player might be 1.25 to win but around 1.75 at −1.5 sets, because dropping a single set happens often.

Total sets and correct score

Will it go to a decider? In best-of-three, "over 2.5 sets" is the same as "the match goes to three". Correct score narrows it further: 2-0, 2-1, 1-2 or 0-2. At Grand Slams in the men's draw, best-of-five opens up 3-0, 3-1 and 3-2.

Game handicap

Some books also offer handicaps on games (e.g. −4.5 games). It's a way to back a dominant favourite at a better price, but one tiebreak can swing it.

How we price tennis

Each player has an Elo rating, updated after every match: beat a higher-rated player and you gain more points than for beating a lower one. The difference between two ratings gives a probability of winning one set. From that single number we compute the whole match — the chance of 2-0, 2-1, 1-2 and 0-2 in best-of-three, or every outcome of best-of-five — and then derive the winner price, the ±1.5 set handicap, total sets and correct score.

The format matters a lot. A player with a 60 % chance per set wins a best-of-three match about 65 % of the time and a best-of-five about 68 %: longer matches favour the better player. Read more in how we price odds.

Tours and the tennis calendar

The season starts in Australia in January and finishes with the tour finals in November. The four Grand Slams — Australian Open, Roland-Garros, Wimbledon, US Open — anchor the year, with clay in spring, a short grass swing in June and July, and hard courts for the rest. Our ATP and WTA tour page covers the structure.

Tennis betting tips

  • Surface is everything. A clay specialist can be a different player on grass, where short points and big serves narrow the gaps.
  • Watch the schedule. A player coming off a three-hour night match may struggle the next day.
  • Women's matches are best of three, including at Slams — so upsets are a little more frequent than in the men's five-setters.
  • Accas of favourites look safe in early rounds and still fail. Our accumulator guide shows the maths.

Tennis shares the Elo approach with MMA and esports.

Frequently asked questions

Can a tennis match end in a draw?

No. Tennis always has a winner, so the match market has two outcomes.

What does −1.5 sets mean?

Your player has to win without dropping a set: 2-0 in best-of-three, or 3-0 or 3-1 in best-of-five.

Why is a favourite shorter in a five-set match?

Every extra set is another chance for the better player to reassert themselves, so shocks become rarer as matches get longer.
