Ice hockey betting: puck line, 60-minute result and totals

Why hockey has two kinds of result market, how the puck line works, and how our goals model sets the odds.

Updated October 5, 2026

Ice hockey is fast, low-scoring and full of bounces, which makes it one of the trickier sports to price — and one of the more interesting to bet. Most games are decided by one or two goals, goalkeepers can steal results, and around one regular-season game in five is level after 60 minutes. This page explains ice hockey betting at Nocturn Sport; the odds are live at nocturnsport.com.

Ice hockey markets

Regulation-time 1X2

The three-way market settles on 60 minutes only. If it's 2-2 at the end of the third period, the draw wins, whatever happens in overtime or the shoot-out. Because draws are common, the favourite's price here is noticeably longer than on the moneyline.

Moneyline

Two-way, overtime and shoot-out included: you only need your team to win the game. Always check which version you are betting — it is the most common hockey mistake.

Puck line

Hockey's handicap is usually ±1.5 goals. A favourite at −1.5 must win by two; that pays well, often around 2.30–2.60, partly because trailing teams pull their goalie late and either concede an empty-netter or tie the game.

Totals

The main line sits around 5.5 or 6.5 goals in the NHL and lower in many European leagues. Power plays, goalie quality and back-to-back schedules all move it.

How our hockey odds are made

We use the same family of model as for football: every club gets two numbers — how dangerous it is going forward and how much it tends to concede — estimated from its previous games, and together they give an expected goal count for each side. These feed a Poisson distribution over every possible scoreline. From that grid we read the three-way 60-minute market, the totals and the handicaps. Hockey goals are rarer than basketball points but more frequent than football goals, which is exactly the range where Poisson works well. More detail in our pricing guide.

Leagues and season

The NHL plays 82 regular-season games from October to April, then four best-of-seven playoff rounds until June. In Europe, the Swedish, Finnish, Swiss, Czech and German leagues run from September to spring, with smaller rinks giving way to bigger international ice in some countries. The Winter Olympics and the world championship add international hockey. Late-season games between teams with nothing to play for, and the tighter, more defensive style of playoff hockey, both tend to push scoring down.

Ice hockey betting tips

  • Confirm the goalie. The starting goaltender is the single biggest factor on a given night. A backup in net can move a total by half a goal.
  • Know your market. 60-minute 1X2 and moneyline are different bets; a 3-2 overtime win loses a home bet in 1X2 and wins it on the moneyline.
  • Back-to-backs bite. Teams on the second night of a back-to-back usually start their backup goalie.
  • Puck line favourites benefit from empty-net goals; underdogs at +1.5 lose exactly when that late empty-netter goes in.

Puck lines are just handicaps; see the betting markets guide for the general logic.

Frequently asked questions

Does hockey 1X2 include overtime?

No. The three-way market is settled on regulation time (60 minutes). The moneyline includes overtime and shoot-outs.

What is the puck line?

The ice hockey handicap, usually −1.5 for the favourite and +1.5 for the underdog.

Why do hockey favourites have long 1X2 prices?

Because a draw after 60 minutes is common, so a share of the probability goes to X.
