Asian handicap explained with examples
How each Asian handicap line settles, from level ball to quarter lines, with real stakes and returns.
Updated October 4, 2026
Asian handicap is a football betting market that removes the draw. Instead of three outcomes, there are two: one team gets a goal head start (or a fraction of one), and you back either side. Depending on the line, a draw on the handicap can mean a refund, or half your stake winning or losing. It looks complicated; once you've seen each line settled, it isn't. All examples below use a £20 stake on the home team at decimal odds of 1.90.
Level ball (0)
No head start. Home win → you win (£38 return). Away win → you lose. Draw → stake refunded (£20 back). It is effectively the same as draw no bet.
Half-goal lines (−0.5 and +0.5)
Home −0.5: the home team must win. Any draw or away win loses. It's equivalent to backing the home side in the 1X2, usually at a better price because the bet has two sides.
Home +0.5: the home team wins or draws. Equivalent to double chance 1X. No refunds on half lines.
Quarter lines (−0.25 and +0.25)
A quarter line splits your stake in two: half goes on the line above, half on the line below.
Home −0.25 = £10 on 0 and £10 on −0.5.
- Home win: both halves win → £38 return.
- Draw: the 0 half is refunded (£10), the −0.5 half loses → £10 back, a half loss.
- Away win: both lose.
Home +0.25 = £10 on 0 and £10 on +0.5.
- Home win: both win → £38.
- Draw: £10 refunded, +0.5 half wins £19 → £29 return, a half win.
- Away win: both lose.
Three-quarter lines (−0.75 and +0.75)
Home −0.75 = £10 on −0.5 and £10 on −1.
- Home wins by 2 or more: both halves win → £38.
- Home wins by exactly 1: the −0.5 half wins (£19), the −1 half is refunded (£10) → £29, a half win.
- Draw or away win: both lose.
Home +0.75 = £10 on +0.5 and £10 on +1.
- Home wins or draws: both win → £38.
- Home loses by exactly 1: the +0.5 half loses, the +1 half is refunded → £10 back, a half loss.
- Home loses by 2 or more: both lose.
Whole-goal lines (−1 and +1)
Home −1: win by 2+ → win. Win by exactly 1 → refund. Draw or loss → lose.
Home +1: win or draw → win. Lose by exactly 1 → refund. Lose by 2+ → lose.

Why bettors like Asian handicap
Two-way markets carry a smaller total margin than three-way ones, and the line lets you express a precise view: "the favourite wins, but probably only by one" is a +0.75 bet on the underdog. Our football odds come from a score-grid model (how we price odds), which is exactly what you need to price these lines, because every half win and refund depends on the probability of each winning margin. For the wider family of handicaps, see betting markets explained and our football betting hub.
Frequently asked questions
What does Asian handicap −0.25 mean?
Half your stake is on level ball (0) and half on −0.5. If the match is drawn, you get half your stake back and lose the other half.
Is Asian handicap 0 the same as draw no bet?
Yes. Both refund the stake on a draw and win if your team wins.
