How to bet on mixed martial arts, what the round and method markets mean, and how Elo ratings price a fight.

MMA betting is about two fighters and a lot of ways a fight can end. A knockout in 30 seconds, a submission in the third, a split decision after 25 minutes — each one settles bets differently. Our MMA odds come from Elo ratings, not from another book, and you can bet them at nocturnsport.com.

Fight winner (moneyline)

Who wins the fight, by any method. Draws are rare in MMA; how a draw is settled depends on the house rules shown on the sportsbook. Favourite prices of 1.20 or shorter are common when there's a big gap in level.

Method of victory

Some books split the win into KO/TKO, submission or decision. A heavy-handed striker against a weak chin is short on KO, while a grappler against a poor wrestler may be the value on submission.

Total rounds

Over or under a line such as 1.5 or 2.5 rounds. Over 1.5 rounds wins once the fight passes the halfway point of round two (2:30). Five-round main events and title fights have higher lines than three-round undercard bouts.

Goes the distance

A yes/no on whether the fight reaches the judges' scorecards. Two cautious, durable fighters make "yes" likely; two finishers make "no" the favourite.

How we price MMA

We give every fighter an Elo rating that rises and falls with results, weighted by the strength of the opponent. Beating an established contender earns more than beating a debutant. The gap between two ratings is converted into a win probability. A 200-point Elo gap, for example, works out at roughly a 76 % chance for the higher-rated fighter, which before margin would be a price of about 1.32.

Elo is a good fit for duels because it only needs results, and MMA careers are short, with few fights per year. The flip side is that a fighter with few bouts carries an uncertain rating — worth remembering when a prospect is priced against a veteran. Our pricing guide explains the maths.

Promotions and rhythm

The UFC stages events most weekends, with numbered pay-per-view cards several times a year, each topped by a five-round main event. Other promotions fill the calendar across Europe, Asia and the Americas. Fights get cancelled or changed late, and short-notice replacements are a regular feature of the sport.

MMA betting tips

• Styles make fights. A wrestler who can take a striker down neutralises the striker's best weapon; records alone don't show that.
• Weight cuts. Missing the scale, or stepping on it looking hollow, often tells you more than the tale of the tape.
• Short-notice replacements usually arrive without a full training camp, and the price doesn't always reflect it.
• Layoffs and age. A long injury break or a veteran moving into his late thirties can erode a rating that looks solid on paper.
